New article available

Just added the latest article to the site:

Parental Concerns - Violence in video games.

I know it's a subject many have dealt with in the past. But it's one of those issues I feel quite strongly about. Please click on the link to have a read. I'm sure you feel strongly about it too so let me know your thoughts afterwards.

In other news I am currently reviewing "The Spirit Engine 2". Should have it out early next week. Also there's a new free game review in the works too. I've put "The Last Remnant" demo aside until I get some of these done!

Last Remnant - Initial thoughts

Just played "The Last Remnant" demo on steam and, well I was actually quite impressed.

The actual look of the game is great. I love the quick navigation around towns, and the backdrops are as spectacular as we're used to from Square. The only issue here is mouse movement! Where is it please? (Found that now thanks!) The view control has another issue where; when you're buying from a shop and use the arrow keys to select items it changes the view at the same time! A little annoying but certainly not a show stopper.

Agh battles!

They've sort of stolen the "blue dragon" method of battles starting here. That is unless it was done before that? And the battle surprised me at first, it looked like too much was going on. However once you get used to it you realise that it's the traditional menu based system. But rather than controlling one character at a time you control teams at a time. This actually works pretty well and I can forsee potential for some awesome battles in the future.

The best thing though, the best thing was you can save at any non-battle point (that I could see anyway). This was great as people kept calling me when I was playing it and I could exit really quickly if I needed to.

So far I'm impressed. I'll try to complete the demo before deciding if it's worth the £30 though. Stay posted for more over the weekend!

Steam news! I like steam...

Well there we go, didn't think that would take too long. Most gimmicky indie games find their way on there. It costs £10 by the looks of things. Not sure if I'll go for it. On the other hand it would be good to post a review for the PC version.

Maybe I miss-judged it because I played it on a console!

Otherwise "The Last Remnant" demo is available to try - well I've just got to see how this one works! Like I said previously, I think it's great news that SquareEnix are putting this on the PC.

Also the new puzzle quest game came out on steam this week. I'd love to get a review done but personally I think £16 is a bit steep for what is essentially a match 3 game. You might see a review appear sometime in March though...

Dawn of War 2 review!

Today I share my most intimate thoughts about Dawn Of War 2! I won't go into too much detail here. But lets just say it looks like I agree with amazon voters more than other reviewers for a change!

You can read the Dawn Of War 2 review by clicking here!

I have to apologise for the crappy quality in the large versions of the screenshots. The Web Authoring system I'm using will not let me upload any image larger than 100k at the moment. I'd go into more detail but it's fairly dull!

This weekend's fantastically fascinating article is almost ready! I'm going to go over it a few more times later just to make sure it's saying what I'm trying to say! This is my first true article for the site and is quite a bit longer than last weeks. Hopefully you'll all be good enough to let me know what you think!

Whats that got to do with the Price of...

Online games!

"They'll be cheaper!" They promised "No distribution costs see?"

Well that's just not been the case of late. Here are some good examples:

Mirrors Edge:
  • Direct2Drive Cost: £35
  • Play.com Cost: £27

Dawn Of War 2:
  • Direct2Drive Cost: £30
  • Steam Cost: £35
  • Amazon.co.uk cost: £23

Whats going on here? Since 2006 I've far preferred to purchase by download. Are distributors trying to get some kind of revenge? Ok, there are games where these costs are reversed but why the heck are these 2 even like that?

I'd write an email but I just know it'd be ignored or I'd receive some gumpf about distribution platform cuts and such.

The issue appears to be that distributors are still in the way. EA are distributing Mirrors edge and they're the ones getting it onto Steam and D2D. They still want their cut so the overall price increases.

There's only one way to combat this. Don't buy the overpriced downloadable games. Even if you really really want them. Otherwise you'll be paying over the odds forever.

Anyway - had some great fun on Team Fortress 2 last night. Those level 3 dispensers just keep you going and going. The new scout weapons are great to fight against but they don't really offer much in the way of an offensive force. Even with a multitude of scouts it only took a couple of us engineers and a pyro to hold them back!

Unfortunately I couldn't get both our sentries into one good shot so that's just RicheyMB's.

Anyway, Dawn Of War 2 review should be finally up tonight - it's taken some time this one!

That TF2 feeling

Are you going to be playing TF2 for the new update?

Well I sure am. It's a "scout" character update but I'm not going to be playing as a scout! No way! It's far more fun if you play as an strong opposing class during these updates. Such as an engineer in this case.

I'm a huge fan of TF2 and I was part of a clan for most of last year. If you've not played it you should really get it now while it's 50% off! It's a far deeper game than Left4Dead I think. There are far more opportunities for hilarious frags and victories. The extra weapons and achievements are just great, especially being a Pyro (flame thrower guy).

I think they should make a co-op campaign for TF2. I've thought about trying it myself but really, I just don't have the skill. I had this vision though of a team of players defending a fort, or advancing on a position. Kind of like l4d, but with TF2 characters on either side.

Anyway, go for a run with the new scout update!

Square Enix...On Steam?!

For me this is pretty huge news!

Although I hardly play games on consoles, I am a fan of Final Fantasy games.

So we've got one game confirmed, The Last Remnant. I did toy with the idea of getting this for my neglected Microsoft games console. However since it's going to be on the PC, the obviously superior machine, I'll wait for that!

There are a lot of people discussing the possibility of FF7 and FF8 coming back to PC. I actually remember buying FF8 and playing it on PC over one weekend many years ago. One of my best weekends ever!

However I've not seen many people say "Um, FF13 plz?" or likewise. Surely if it's on the 360 this year a PC port in steam is going to be a strong possibility?

Now I just need Mystwalker to decide the PC is a good gaming platform and I'll be all set!

Puzzle Quest Review!

A new review has found it's way onto the site today!

Jon Yates has reviewed a slightly older game: Puzzle Quest. Mainly because we can't wait for the new puzzle quest to arrive! So he decided to go back and play this one again.

I wish their site loaded a bit faster though! I could do without that flash rubbish. And I wish they'd put the release date on there so I didn't have to go to play.com to find out when it's available! (It's the 13 of March '09 by the way)

Anyway, besides that Jon has given a good overview and description of why you should have played the first game in the series. Click here to read the review!

Dawn Of War 2 is not a short game!

Still working on the Dawn of War 2 review. It's a long game and even after playing it over the weekend and last night I dont think I'm that close to completing it.

Luckily, being the prolific writer that I am(!), I have prepared for such an event! A review on the casual game "Fix it up - Kate's adventure" is now on the site. It's the first casual game I've reviewed on this site so far.

End of week One

We've been here for one week now!

I've got no idea who's reading, but you are! So thanks for that!

The free games section is getting a good look every day, probably because thats the section getting the most love from us at the moment. We like to give pay-for games a bit more time when reviewing because you're paying for them! And it's nice to get more information about it before you part with your hard earned cash.

Weekly Highlights
I think my game of the week has to be "Assassin Blue", a Game-Maker game that lasts only a hanfull of hours. Ironically I gave it the smallest score! It's a great little blast and well worth a try. You can read the review by clicking here.

Some of the other games I had played previously to starting the site, so there may be a slow-down in the number of reviews next week.

Whats New on the site?
Articles! I've started off small with a fairly tiny article this week. I had another in the works but because of a message I received mid-week I felt this had to be said. It's about whether of not free games should be allocated a score. Click here to have a read - I mention Cave story!

Otherwise here is a list of all reviews written this week
Assassin Blue
Fantastic Contraption
Gravity Hook
Ice Breaker
Left4Dead
Master of Defence
The Space Game

Whats coming up!
More reviews thats for certain. To give you a taste, I'm currently playing "Dawn Of War 2", "The Spirit Engine 2" and "Syberia". One I'm enjoying more than I thought I would, another is exactly how I thought it would be, and the last is a huge disapointment! I'll leave you to guess which is which!

I've also been looking into a comments system so you can have your say on these reviews. However finding a nice neat one is proving to be more difficult than I thought. If you want to see the one I've been playing with, check out the Ice Breaker review.

Message Ends.
Thats all from me this week. I'll be keeping this blog updated every Sunday at the very least. Remember if you've released a game let me know! You can contact me either by leaving a comment on the blog, or by using the Contact form on the website.
