Pop-ups down? Fantastic!

Is the Fantastic Contraption fantastic again?

I'm sure my previous posting about this would not have effected their decision to take them down, however they do seem to have disappeared! I was going to take a screenshot of the offending advertisements and send it to them asking if they thought it was appropriate, however I've missed my chance!

It could be that this has corresponded with the end of their "Fantastic Contest" in which case they could oh so easily return.

I'll be doing a spot check over the next week or so but if they stay gone I'll be reverting the review back to it's original score!

The Lowest score so far.

Yes I have given my lowest score so far, and it was well deserved! Flash games should be made with style, finesse or at least with a bit of fun.

With Evolution I found none of these things but I did find something...

Click here to read the Evolution review!

I was going to release my Battleforge review but I've just not played it enough to be fair to it. I'm going to need a couple more nights at least for this beast!

Did you all get the steam Ubisoft deal at the weekend? I'm currently playing through "Beyond Good and Evil" which is disrupting my review patterns! It's a bit too much fun...

Giant tree-like beast creature thing...I choose you!

Wow, 2 identical Pokemon jokes in one day. Bad, bad boy Andy.

The incomprehensible meaning from this post title is that I'm currently playing through Battleforge. Which is a great big change from the usual review queue item! This is far more into mmorpg territory that I've been in since playing gunbound! I generally steer clear of WoW or Guildwars - not because I don't like them, but rather I don't want my life to vanish! (And it would, it so would.)

First impressions? Argh Is that DRM that has just installed itself onto my PC box? Anything that's called "Bootstrap.exe" has to be in some way DRM related in my experience and I am not happy.

I'd like to say it won't tarnish the review, but that's not the way I roll. Reviews are an emotional thing for me and the final mark given relates to you how I felt about it rather than if it's technically well done or uses the latest shader rubbish. We all know games are about emotional attachment. So if you can't enjoy it because you're conscious that it's just installed nasties onto your machine then it can expect a scathing write up!

That said, it is enjoyable so far - await the review soonish!

Today's article - the top 10 FPS weapons!

That's right, something a little more fun this week rather than the high quality, well thought out journalism from previous weeks...hmm.

Anyway, after deliberation with my closest gaming friends this is the list I came up with. See if you can guess my top #1 before you read!

The new thing about this article however is that you have a chance to reply and add your own favourite to the list using a new feedback tool at the bottom of the post! So without further delay:

Deal Alert! Ubisoft bargain.

Steam have a fantastic game pack deal on at the moment:

"Beyond Good and Evil", "Far Cry", "Dark Messiah of Might and Magic" and "IL2 1946" all for £9!

Not sure about the last one but the other 3 are definitely worth the price of the pack, even if you own one of them already!

Deus Ex 3 - are we hopefull?

I'm a huge fan of Deus Ex. It's one of the best mixes of fps, rpg, game-noir ever created. It was kind of like a futuristic version of Thief and included stealth elements, setting traps, special abilities and augmentations. If you've not played this you can buy it on steam these days for an incredibly cheapo price.

The second installment was fairly embarrassing, since early screenshots seemed to promise and exciting game. Unfortunately it appeared to almost kill off the series.

Currently the 3rd game in the series is under construction. This is a prequel of the first game and features a character called "Adam". Now who knows how this will turn out, however there has been a recent visit by one of their forum members which makes me more hopefull about the outcome!

These are the wrong trousers Gromit!

So I completed the new Wallace and Gromit game yesterday from telltale games. And to celebrate I wrote a review! Or something like that.

I had a terrible urge to make a lame joke about Gromit's original "voice actor" returning but decided not to!

Click here to read the review!

Tomorrow we have an article on first person shooter weapons! I was going to include a vote but I don't think enough people are visiting for that quite yet. Maybe we'll revisit it at a later date...

Oh I forgot to mention that there are over 20 reviews on the site now! Not bad for 2 months work when I've got a full time job already. Still deciding what to review next week, not much really coming out that's worth looking at so it might be a harsh review of something I hated instead! Actually that sounds like fun...

There's such a thing as too many adverts!

And "The Fantastic Contraption" has recently crossed that line.

I had originally given it quite a glowing review of 85, one of the highest scores on pc-games-and-reviews to date! However I have reduced this down to 79 due to the latest developments on the site.

The adverts that popped up are completely inapropriate to the game and the impression given is just plain greedy. I can put up with google ads and banner ads, as long as they are game specific - surely that makes sense. I have no problem with basic, standard advertising. However, when I see that many adverts on a site I start to worry for my computer security - especially when they can bypass the IE pop up blocker.

I still think this is a great game and I had originally visited recently to see if the contest had started so I could blog about that. It's sad I've had to talk about this instead...

You can be a flash cat too!

The Flash Cat review is up and running, thanks for Jon again for his weekly reviewing skills. This is another fantastic game from the Nitrome guys who brought you Ice Breaker! So this is another game worth checking out for sure.

Click here to read the Flash Cat Review!

In other news you may have seen the front page change recently. As a good friend of mine very rightly pointed out, new visitors have no idea what's happened on the site over the last week or so. Therefore the latest 4 reviews will be shown as little banners on the first page. Click here to see the front page!

Friday will bring a Wallace and Gromit review!

Fear the Maw!

Yes indeed, fear the Maw. For it is fearsome.

As well is this review I wrote about it. If you're just interested in the dlc part of the review, well I wasn't too impressed with that. But I won't go into too much detail here, otherwise I'll just be repeating myself!

So click here to read the review of The Maw!

This week we have a review from Jon on another of Nitrome's fantastical flash offerings, otherwise there will be a Wallace and Gromit review at the end of the week!

You know it makes sense

Coming up this week!

We have the usual 3 review schedule! There's going to be a "The Maw" review for sure. I've been playing it over the weekend as well as a couple of flash games (once I got flash working since the latest update! grr)

I've also been doing more brainstorming on what will happen with the site in future. There are so many things I want to do, such as contests and votes. The visitor count isn't quite there for these yet, but it will be soon if the trend continues! For now it takes long enough to keep the reviews and articles going, so I hope you'll continue to visit!

As usual, please use the contact form if you have any suggestions or thoughts about the site!

We're in the Army Now! (Todays Article)

Today's Article is a brief overview of military games, investigating the reasons people would play them and my top 3 that I have played. I even link to a competitor (sort of) site of mine who highlighted a very bizzare "box-art conspiracy" that is relevent to this.

It's a big different to the other articles and way out of my comfort zone so I would appreciate any feedback as usual!

Click here to read the article!

In other news; Steam are having an Indie Game Sale this weekend with between 10% - 33% off some games! Go and check it out! It's very useful since I decided to review "The Maw" this week!

Serpent of ISIS

Oh man, I wrote a whole review and didn't realise I'd spelt the name of the game wrong all the way through!

I was calling it serpent of iris rather than Isis...oops.

Anyway, putting that aside, the review is now up!

Click here to read the Serpent Of Isis review!

Tomorrows article is in finishing stages so please visit tomorrow to have a gander!

I'm feeling in a casual mood

Tonights review will be Big Fish Games's recently released "Serpent of Iris" game. It's a hidden object "casual" game. If you're not familiar with these game types they are games specifically aimed at people who don't like games that are too immersive but prefer light puzzles that are not too taxing.

If World of Warcraft is on one side of a scale (in terms of genre overlap) then these games would be on the complete other side.

I've already reviewed one casual game (Fix it up, Kate's adventure) so it will be interesting to see how a time-management game fares against this hidden object game!

You mustn't give in to the "fear"

The F.E.A.R 2 review is now up! It was sooo hard not to read any other reviews before I'd written mine since it's been out for a while now. I was planning on getting it a few weeks ago for review, but decided on Dawn Of War 2 at the time. As far as new releases go it's quite cheap so I was curious to know if that reflected the quality of the game. Well I can safely say...ah, well why not go have a read in full.

This review is not safe for those of you with a sense of humour, or heart conditions.

More review goodness on Friday!

Not in my town! Not now, not ever.

Just what the heck are the developers of "The Maw" thinking? And please note I have Not played the game yet - just read about it on Steam.

This new independent game "The Maw" now has 2 add-ons for just over a dollar each. They feature new levels and objects and puzzles not in the original game.

This kind of thing really irks me - and it causes me to make (possibly unfair) comparisons with games like Half-life like this;

Is The Maw without the add-ons like Half-life without the final Zen levels? Or is it like the "add-ons" opposing force and (eek) Blue shift? Should I wait until the "Total" pack comes out for a cheaper price then?

From the descriptions that's what it feels like. It also reminds me of the Relic tactic of introducing new races in their Dawn of War series expansions. It's on a different scale but it's the same thing.

I'm not reserving my bile for add-ons entirely. I disagree with micro-transactions too. In many cases you can end up paying far more than a game is worth this way. Unfortunately it must work because many mmorpgs do this now.

This is just my opinions of the system and not the games in question however!

Rest assured I plan to get "The Maw" and it's add-ons to check it out. Perhaps it will change my mind about dlc and its merits. Expect a review next week!

A plague is upon us!

Well, just me actually. I feel quite ill.

So there will be no review tonight while I recover over the next couple of days. However there will be on for F.E.A.R 2 later this week! Also there will be a new free-ware game review of something a little nostalgic this week.

In the meantime, don't forget the latest review for Mr Robot and the Where to buy PC Games article.

The PC Game Buyers Guide and the latest review!

Is a little different - rather than a new article this weekend I've been working on a guide on where is best to buy games and shop around for the best prices!

It's something I've been thinking about for a while, since a lot of people are always asking me how I know about all the offers on at the time. It's simply because I subscribe to most of the newsletters offered by steam, etc...

But that doesn't mean there are no long-term deals going on! And it's all about knowing where to go for the right game. Therefore I've written this guide to help people who are both new and experienced at buying games online. Hopefully it will help save everyone some money.

Of course it's not definitive, I know a lot about this but not everything and there are new sites appearing all the time. So if you have a suggestion in the form of a great site for buying games, let me know!

Yesterday's Game Review was: Galatron!
Yes I am late posting about it since it was put on the site quite late last night. This is a brill space combat game and well worth looking at. I didn't review it since it doesn't work on my own pc but I have seen it in action! Jon, the usual suspect, has taken over for this one.

Happenings on the site and the "70% truth"

Well there's plenty going on so I thought I would just talk about it here for a while.

Obviously we're still discovering our unique voice, it's still early days after all. I've still not officially submitted the site to google yet! I'm waiting til we have well over 30 pages of reviews and articles. So probably next week sometime for that.

There are a few people I really want involved in the site later on and have been discussing what I'd like to do that is different to what's out there. There's not much room really. All I can say is that we look at these games in a different way to most people. It's said that a lot of review sites' range of scores is from 70 upwards (ie, the worst score a game is likely to get is 70)

That's bonkers!

If we see a game and think it's complete rubbish there would be no point telling everyone it's ok (ie, 70 out of 100). And during the course of my time running the site I'm prepared to take all the flack about it. In fact I look forward to it! I can't plan or predict when we'll have to score a game lower than, for example, 40. But it will happen, and probably soon.

Otherwise the plans I have involve a lot of experimentation! I've even discussed video review/parody type stuff, but it's a lot of work and we don't want it to be seen as "trying to be ". Finding a unique way of doing those will certainly be a challenge - that's if we even decide to do it!

What I can promise is that the articles and reviews continue as scheduled. I'm pretty much working full time on this as well as having a full time job! The only thing I can ask is if you like an article or review tell a friend! If you don't like an article or review, tell me!

When I reviewed Mr Robot

Ok I'm officially shattered - this review took a lot longer than I expected and I had to trim it a lot to get it down to something readable!

Read the Mr Robot Review here!

Tuesday, 10 March 2009

I didn't want to post more about this...

Since I've posted a lot about Team Fortress 2 recently!

However I was playing a couple of nights ago and, in case you didn't know...When you die you get shown a picture of the person who just fragged you. In this case my friend RicheyMB who was playing as an Engineer, had just been stabbed by a spy. However yours truly was just on his way to help, also as an Engineer.

This picture really sums up a lot of what I love about the game!

In other news, I'm currently working hard on the next review and article. I've really moved out of my comfort zone for this article. It covers a type of game I'm not too familiar with! Again, I'm being forced to do "research" whatever that is...

World Of Goo Review is up and ready

The review for World of Goo is up and ready for your consumption.

Click here to read the review

I think I might be diametrically opposed to all other reviewers out there! But maybe that's a good thing?

Been looking at the big studio release calender for a possible next commercial game review - any suggestions? I was thinking of looking at Fear 2 as it's something I missed out in favour of Dawn Of War 2. There are loads I'd like to look at but only so many hours in a week!

Let me know what you think is worth looking at!

(don't forget the contact form)

About page...

The "About" page is up now.You can have a look at it here - for some reason it isn't appearing in the side bar. I am investigating!

It's not something I recommend you all read, just for information really if anyone is interested! It basically covers what I'm currently and will be doing with the site for the future. Of course I'm always interested in new ideas so if you have any - Drop me a line here!

In far, far more interesting news there will be "Mr Robot" and "World of Goo" reviews this week. Probably World Of Goo first since it's the most recent!

Steam and Impulse offers this weekend

Tasty looking offers this weekend on steam/impulse!

On steam you can buy the infamous "World of Goo" for £4.99 - I've always wanted to try this and see if it's as good as people say. Expect a review on this during next week.

On Impulse, "Mr Robot" is only $3 - I know for a fact this is a bargain. I can't wait to play the full version of this. Again a review should appear sometime next week!

Keep posted for more happenings on the site over the next few days!

Team Fortresss 2 - what's missing?

Today I investigate what might be missing from the world of Team Fortress 2. I love this game but there's more that could be done, and I've listed my top 5 areas for improvement!

Click here to read the article

In other news the about page will be up tomorrow for those of you interested or curious. Some kind of FAQ will be with it explaining a bit more about my mission for the site and why I decided to go up against the big boy reviewers. Hope you come back to read that then!

Quake Live Review

I've posted the Quake Live review.

Click here to read the Quake Live Review

The site news related to this is that clicky pictures is in! Basically you can click on the smaller image here and see the larger version. I've had to pay for additional hosting elsewhere for this but it's just a necessity for a site like mine.

Soon I'm going to add an "about" page so you can all make fun of me and what I look like.

Tomorrows article is pretty much ready - some extra checking tomorrow but otherwise done. Please visit tomorrow and let me know what you think!

Blurst write up done

The review of Blurst is finished. Click here to have a look at the Blurst Review, as always I'm sure there are people who will disagree! Let me know, discussion is good!

Talking of discussion, in a couple of months I'll be adding a forum to the site. It won't be too soon since we're still in early days yet and I want to make sure a forum would get good use. There's nothing sadder than an empty forum!

One thing that has sparked my interest however is the idea of creating a monthly or bi-monthly ebook from the material on the site. This would be downloadable in the form of a pdf document and would contain all the reviews and articles from the site plus other bits and bobs. Got to put some more thought into it yet but it sounds like a good idea so far!

Right, time to look for a solution to QuakeLive kicking me all the time!

Blursting with Excitment

Did you see what I did there eh?

Ok, well I've been playing Blurst most of the evening, you'll get a "Full Review" tomorrow. First impressions are that you should give it a go, it's not exactly unique but it's not far off!

Also, I'll be writing up my "quake live" thoughts soon too.No I won't - Currently I can't play past the training missions. I think the anti-cheat reckons I'm cheating!

Not sure what the next commercial title will be. Possibly fear2? I wanted to see if it was as bad as some people say! Those kind of reviews make me want to prove it's a good game!

Jon is working on some indie titles right now: Galatron and Geneforge 5. They're fairly different from each other so it should be an interesting read!

Also, I've found a way to link to larger pictures using a service I already subscribe to. So expect better quality link pics soon!

The Spirit Engine 2 Reviewed

The review of "The Spirit Engine 2" is now up on the site!

This being an RPG type game I had to spend a bit of extra time on this. About as long as I did on the Dawn Of War2 review probably. I first saw this game reviewed on a different site where it received a fantastic score. I wasn't so sure so decided I should check it out and make up my own mind.

Click here to read the Spirit Engine 2 review

The problem with reviewing good games...

Is that you don't want to stop playing them!

Unfortunately you just don't get the time you need to play completely through some games. Obviously I want to get a review done every 2 days and now I'm reviewing larger games too time just disappears!

However, I have managed to find time to give "The Spirit Engine 2" a really good go. So a review will be posted later tonight based on how far I have progressed.

Otherwise there are other reviews waiting to be finished off - expect another "free game" review on Thursday!
