Picaroon MMORTS! Beta Key Giveaway!

The guys over at Nice Technology have kindly given us a shed load of Beta Keys which can be found at the bottom of this post - but before then I'm going to tell you why you should try this game out!

Picaroon is a futuristic pirate based Massively Multiplayer Real Time Strategy game. Basically it's a muliplayer pirate game with RTS functionality. I also found it has an element of tower defense when I was attacked while not in the game!

That was my only complaint really, that it was pretty easy for me to dispose of this guys fleet once he'd disapeared (he couldn't attack me as I only had one island and hadn't expanded at all - I was learning!) I built a bunch of defense towers and they ripped his fleet to shreds. Actually that was quite fun!

So you start off with one island and a bunch of huts. It gets a bit civilization-y at this point where you need to build up your islands infrastructure so you're ready to take on the rest of the world. To start with building things is quite quick and you can spend about an hour on the first day just preparing your island. There are a bunch of tutorial in-built missions to show you the ropes which they do quite well and completing each of them awards you different one-shot special powers.

The special powers are the kind of thing you'd imagine, where they help speed up production or increase resource gathering or even help out your fleet.

I admitedly didn't get much chance to play with the fleet stuff, I got completely sidetracked after the first few days (reviews in the next coupld of days will show why!) I did however build a small fleet and throughout the game I appear to have gone quite unnoticed! I will certainly be trying to make more of a name for myself next year though when I get to play again.

Back to the island management however, I just wanted to mention how it's possible to play the game over long periods of time. Upgrade plans are available so that once you've told your populus where you want buildings to be by creating them, the game will automatically upgrade them according to the plan you choose. For instance you could build a shipyard, foresters and fisheries but you only want to build up the fisheries so that you have plenty of food to go round (foresters and shipyards use food constantly) so you could choose the "Maximize Food" upgrade plan that would concentrate on your food production buildings. Nice idea that...

There are a lot of neat touches so far and I can't wait to see where they take it over the next few weeks as the beta continues. The official site can be found here

Finally onto the beta keys! Take one and try it quick before they all go!
