Delays, delays...Airport games?

This time it's not be being lazy! I've had several trips out to different parts of the country and even a trip to Ireland recently that have just made it impossible to get any writing done!

But I'm hoping to get two - that's right TWO - reviews done this weekend as I've played and completed two games!

Besides that however I was waiting at Bristol Airport on Wednesday and watched from a good seat in the departures lounge as a flight was announced as ready-to-board. At this point a queue formed from people who mysteriously appeared from nowhere! But I was thinking, I wonder if there's a game out there that deals with Airport management that has a kind of theme-hospital look to it?

If not there should be one! If you know of anything like this give me a shout, otherwise I'll be having a look myself for something similar...

Tidal Waves + Tetris = Tidalis?

Ok it's probably nothing like tetris...but everyone loves a good puzzle game right?...Right?

Well probably, I do at any rate so when I'm told there's a new concept floating around I have to go check it out. Unfortunately Tidalis is still in Beta and probably won't be out until June-ish this year. Fortunately it's looking pretty good and I really love the sounds when the cascade thingy goes through the blocks in this video:

It's by the same chaps who brought us the rts extraveganza that is AI Wars and the Zenith Remnant which is a bit of a change from this, no? Looks like they have several different projects on the go in fact including some RPG-ish thing maybe? Who knows, but they certainly look like they're worth keeping an eye on still!

For more info about Tidalis, check out their site!

Indie FPS time - Acrogorpon!

Recently I heard from ARH Games about their new impending release of Multiplayer FPS game Acrogorpon. It's a pretty fast paced affair and looks like it includes a fair bit of rocket-jumping or similar. Actually rather than me talk about it, why not check out the videos showing the game in action:

They've even done a video of their christmas themed level:

I hate saying negative things about games (ahem) but the graphics do look a little dated. On the other hand it looks like it's a very small team of people working on this... But I'd be terribly hypocritical if I judged a game just on this. I've not played it yet so if anyone else has had a go please feel free to comment!

A Strange Package!

Half way through the week there was a note pushed through the door by the local postie informing me that they were holding a packet for me.

This was puzzling as I hadn't ordered anything for quite some time and I had this deep dread within me for what I would find when I finally managed to collect it from the post office.

I was nicely surprised to see that it wasn't a box full of bills or a hate bomb from someone who thinks DLC is a good idea, but rather my Big Fish Games Plush toy! They give these out when you've been a subscription (they call it "Game Club") member for 12 months and didn't even charge me postage, which was nice.

I'm not sure why I'm surprised this actually arrived - perhaps I'm getting too cynical about this kind of thing lately. But it's always nice to get a free gift. I shall treasure it forever...or until my two year anniversary when they don't send me something and I'll be grumpy about it.

New Review: City States of Xemerys

I've been playing this far more than is probably healthy for me. It's a city builder game thing that's played completely in your browser! It's also completely free which is always a bonus these days.

As for the gameplay itself, I thought it was...well you'll just have to read the review to find out!

My Time With: Royal Envoy (collectors edition)

So bigfishgames were pushing this in everyone's faces (Big Fish Game Club members anyway) and I decided I should at least see what all the fuss was about.

It's one of these time management games where you have build houses and other structures to achieve certain goals, like earning a particular amount, to progress to the next level. Each house you build provides tax-income that needs to be collected by one of your tax collectors by clicking on the house in question. Upgrading houses makes them produce more tax and so on and so on...

The thing is though, the production values here are crazy high! Everything looks really really nice and the music is just fantastic. There are even semi-animated scenes providing a backstory for this fantasy world.

Because of the easy going but quite rewarding gameplay I was going to buy this. I really was! But then when I clicked the buy link from the BFG client and it took me to the purchase screen I was quite shocked that I wasn't going to be able to use one of the BFG credits (which should be good for any individual game on the site!)

In fact this casual game will set you back $20, supposedly because it's the collectors edition but I couldn't find the non-collectors edition on the site to buy instead! If this is going to be the way of things in the future I can see my BFG subscription stopping - afterall I've been a member for a year and a half now and still have not received my Felix-The-Fish plushy!

With all that said, it's a good looking game and will definitely appeal to nearly any time management fanatic, so check it out here! Personally I'll be waiting for the Non-Collectors Edition...

New Guide: Tanking In Raids within World Of Warcraft

I'm very grateful to Llewlyn Morgan who has sent in his guide on Tanking In Raids within World Of Warcraft. It's written mainly for players who have some experience with the game but want to advance to the next level. I'll admit to not knowing a lot of what's in there having only had minimal experience with the game myself, but it looks quite technical and clever!

Take a look at the guide here!

New Review: Kings Smith!

The Kings Smith review has now been put up on the site (yay!) And I can rest for another couple of hours before realising I'm completely behind with everything!

Kings Smith is a time management game about becoming a master Blacksmith. And I thought it was...well, you'll just have to read it to find out!

My Time With: Left4Dead 2

Okay I suppose my recent silence has as much to do with this as it does my *ahem* other projects so I guess I should spend some time talking about it - specifically if I think Left4Dead 2 is worth buying if Iyou've got the first game. At least thats the question I would have asked if I didn't already own both.

It was on special offer a couple of weeks ago so I bought it and I've managed to battle my way through the single player campaign.

To be honest, and this is sacreligous to a Valve fanboy such as myself, I'm really quite glad I didn't buy it for full price. It really was as if a load of extra stuff was added to the first game and it seriously reeks of being DLC dressed up as a full game. But I'm not going to just leave it like that, I'm going to justify those comments.

So lets start with the weapons. Yes there's a load more but some, such as the AK-47, feel like they've been plucked straight out of CounterStrike with added accuracy bolted on. It's pretty cool to have but it's something that should have been in the first game. Also there's no aparent advantage of using the AK-47 over the assault rifles that appear in the game. Now the shotguns feel far less fun than they did in the first game, I've not got the first installed right now to compare but I'm sure it's not as effective as it used to be.

Melee weapons! I hear that as the main reason to get L4D2 and while it's fun to whack zombies about the head with a guitar or cricket bat, never has the phrase "bringing a knife to a gun fight" been more apt. If you get swarmed you'll wish you had a rifle, or at least the twin hand guns instead.

I did enjoy a couple of the new features. The environmental effects were immense, especially the start of the first campaign and also during the "Heavy Rain" campaign. Aside from this I liked the new characters, they had a bit more about them than the original 4 and their whole sound and appearence spoke volumes about their past. There's a great bit near the beginning where they all introduce themselves which was kind of cool.

Anyway, I'm hoping that "The Passing" (the DLC that's coming up) makes it worth the while, but until then and we know if the Old Survivors Meet New Survivors parts are as awesome as they sound I'll still not be convinced it is worth the full price...

Review: Greed - Black Border!

Phew, it's only taken me a few weeks to get through. The main problem I had here was that it keeps crashing on me! I'm not sure if this is just me or the game, and it only seems to be happening in the later levels, and I have had a hdd crash since...so I didn't mention it in the review itself.

Even so I thought that it was...well you'll just have to read it to find out!
